Will The Witcher change Romancelandia?

By a Bookseller

Have you seen The Witcher on Netflix yet? If you haven’t watched this show then get on it. It has a broody damaged hero that battles monsters, has magic and….believe it or not…..humor. Every time Geralt of Rivia says “fuck” I swoon…..hard.

The Witcher has reignited my love of all things Paranormal Romance. I remember the early days of Sherrilyn Kenyon, Gena Showalter, Kresley Cole, Karen Marie Moning, Nalini Singh, Laura Adrian, JR Ward and so many others. It seemed that there was a new PNR release every Tuesday I just HAD TO HAVE.

Now, I wait for my book from the Warden, Nalini Singh or Gena Showslter once a year. Twice if I’m lucky. PNR just isn’t as popular anymore.

The last 8 years or so has seen a shift in Romance to contemporary romance. Trilogy’s and duets with cliffhangers, BDSM and so much angst.

Indie authors have stormed the castle and given readers so many amazing choices we never had before. Sure, there are some PNR and Fantasy indie authors out there. But the selection isn’t what it was back in the early to mid 2000s.

BUT…..I recently read War of Hearts by S. Young and was absolutely blown away with it. The world building, the strong heroine, the uber alpha werewolf hunting her. This book is what I’ve been waiting for. It reminded me of the first time I read A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole. I was caught up in the pages and transported all over the world. Reading about fantastical characters that could do extraordinary things.

I also read Cowboy in Wolfs Clothing by Kait Ballenger this last year. I’ll be honest with you. I’m not a fan of the title. The cover is hot but in my opinion the publisher went with the “campy romance” feel. But when you read this book it’s ANYTHING but campy. It’s dark and twisted and the hero is NOT you’re typical textbook “good guy”. He’s done some not so good things and is looking to change that. The entire world that Ms Ballenger built for this series is complex, full of intrigue and I couldn’t put it down.

Could these new series be a sign of great things to come???

I’m holding onto hope that The Witcher will usher back an explosion of Paranormal Romance. I know I’ve missed it. How about you?
